The Jersey Shore

The Jersey Shore

With many of MTV's reality tv shows, this show personally tops the most controversial that I've watched with all its dysfunctional and misfit glory. Released in 2010 and having 6 seasons, it follows a group of young adults who are made to live under the same roof in Seaside Heights, New Jersey and see what it has to offer. This show uncovers the over the top personalities of literally all the leads in this show. This is the kind of show which makes you lose a bit of brain cells if you ask me. Nothing describes escalated drama like this show, which makes it so cringing but entertaining to watch.

Moving onto the first episode, the eight housemates are moved in one at a time and get acquainted with eachother and the house they will be staying at for the summer. Then things get down to business, we are shown their young wild lifestyles of alcohol, clubbing and partying demeanours. We are then pushed to the sparked romance between Sammy and Mike, however things change right? And it totally did when the boys decide to invite three girls home to their hot tub. Riveting pilot I know. Raunchy? Definitely. Vulgar to say the least? Of course.

This reality tv show is definitely not for family audiences but maybe for the young and free minded party life people, willing to having a not so serious end to their day. The Jersey Shore is the one to watch if you would like to forget about your own problems and focus on theirs because there are p l e n t y.

My Kitchen Rules (Australia)

My Kitchen Rules - Australia

Unlike many other previous reality tv shows I have reviewed, this is a refreshing different kind of reality tv show. My Kitchen Rules. It is a food reality-competition tv show that is a popular watch here in Australia where paired up contestants from different states battle together in their homes cooking up their finest 3 course meals to impress the judges in order to win the massive prize of $100 000 in hopes of achieving their restaurant dreams.

The pilot episode kicks off with an instant restaurant, typical for the show where some of the contestants come to eat the food prepared by the chosen candidates. Sneak peaks of the contestants personalities are shown throughout the episode and the food is judged not only by the judges and contestants but also the audience watching, which I find most entertaining about these kind of shows. Each episode is set out to let us, the audience in on everything that goes on throughout the cooking and process so we can pick out for ourselves what the other contestants motives are.

This is a great family reality tv show to watch, I really enjoyed watching My Kitchen Rules throughout the seasons and would definitely give it a thumbs up for those who like to stray away from the fake reality of actual reality tv shows, because this. has. an. actual. purpose.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

Hopping on the trend and franchise of the Real Housewives, this is a take on the rich and luxurious lives of these housewives set in Beverly Hills. This is the one to watch if you're willing to deal with the constant and unnecessary drama that lies in the domestic lives of these 6 women. For it's popularity, they must be doing something right! With some of the characters being linked to many popular people some of which Kelsey Grammer, very known plastic surgeon Paul Nassif and even Paris Hilton!

The pilot, "Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Wealthiness" is the quite the mouthful I must say. This episode includes Adrienne Maloof who we've been given a rundown as to where her wealth lies (family owning Palms Casino Resort) take outs all her girlfriends to a VIP trip on a private jet to sit courtside for a basketball game. Holding back nothing at all, they are not shy to show off their lavish lifestyle and habits to spend. We are introduced to all the personas in their bubble of lap and luxury.

I would say that this is the epitome of the what reality tv show is all about, just seen in the light of luxury and affluent women. Would I have re-runs of this? Probably not. Would I be dying waiting for newest ep to come out? Probably not either, but all in all if you want to know what goes on in the lives of these lavish housewives, be my guest!

The Hills

The Hills

One of MTV's many popular reality tv shows realised in the early days of 2006, The Hills was a result and spin off of the previous reality tv show known as Laguna Beach (which was basically about about a bunch of teenagers who lived in Laguna Beach and their clique dramas) with the same female lead Lauren Conrad along with three of her friends Heidi, Whitney and Audrina. The show follows these four young women who come to Los Angeles to pursue their dreams, full of typical drama it focuses on maintaining the balance on boys, friendships and their careers in LA.

The first episode's title "New City, New Drama" says its all. Lauren moves into the big city of LA with her bestfriend Heidi Montag into a quaint little apartment and while settling in, quickly needs to get into the mojo of balancing her work life being an intern at Teen Vogue and doing fashion school. Nothing starts off a good reality tv show without a little drama, and of course, there was. With Lauren hosting a work event and Heidi trying to sabotage it (unintentionally of course!).

I found this show to be one of my favourites and all time "oldie but goldies" for all young girls out there! Many aspects within the show related to me in so many ways and I was surprised at how the drama can actually hit much closer to home!

Keeping Up With the Kardashians

Keeping Up With the Kardashians

This hit reality tv show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians first premiered on paid television in 2007 and has skyrocketed to popularity since growing to 12 seasons. This show gives us the peak into the domestic lives of the Kardashian-Jenner family in all its chaotic mix of business, family and fame filled glory. I would definitely recommend if you're willing to put aside all the controversy that surrounds the Kardashians/Jenners!

The pilot episode "I'm Watching You" starts with a panned camera angle of Kris Jenner's house which I assume would be a main location throughout the seasons. In this, it kicks off right into the drama of the family with Kim having her reservations on going on the Tyra Banks show, knowing she would have to talk about her scandalous sex tape but before we could really consider it ourselves, mother Kris Jenner plans her anniversary with husband Bruce Jenner with a twist - will Kris be able to make it to her own anniversary plans? As she decides to get drunk the night before with oldest daughter Kourtney.

All in all, throughout the drama packed into this pilot episode they did not forget to miss out on the introductions of each family member which I feel is necessary to get a personal feel of the family's dynamic and a catchy theme song at that. Personally, for the shows first episode, being a hit or miss it was definitely a hit! They have  reeled me in to want to watch more!

F.R.I.E.N.D.S

Friends

‘Friends’ is an American sitcom that aired from 1994 to 2004. The show features a group of six friends, namely, Ross, Monica, Joey, Phoebe, Chandler and Rachel, all of whom live in Manhattan, New York.

The pilot episode, entitled ‘The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate’, opens with the all too familiar theme song “I’ll Be There For You” , one that every individual who lived through the 1990s should surely know. The show then moves on to showcase the cafe, a recurring venue associated to the group, where we are introduced to the diverse conglomerate for the first time.
It is here we learn that Ross has recently split from his wife, after discovering her true sexuality. The gang then attempt to introduce Rachel to the ‘real world’ of jobs and expectations after she decides to leave her husband at the alter, whilst Monica accompanies ‘Paul the Wine Guy’ on a dinner date.

I found the episode extraordinarily fetching and hilarious. From Joey’s infamous metaphor of women and ice cream, to Ross’s awkward charm, I was hanging on to every line, watching intently. I can’t stop myself from watching more episodes!

How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Mother is a sitcom that aired on (CBS) from 2005 to 2014. It follows the story of Ted, a bachelor living in Manhattan, as he recounts to his children the journey that led him and his four best friends to meet his wife.

The pilot episode opens with a photo collage of Ted, set to the theme song of the show, that serves to introduce us to both the character and his lifestyle. At the beginning of the episode, we see Marshall, Ted’s college best-friend, propose to his then-girlfriend Lily, leading Ted to question his own life, as the reality of not having a serious girlfriend becomes clearer than ever.

This leads him and his eccentric ‘other best-friend’ Barney to play a pick up game at their local bar, McLaren’s, where to their surprise Ted meets an eligible girlfriend, Robin.  However, an over-enthusiastic Ted exclaims that he is on love with her on the first date, perhaps ruining his chances forever.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode of How I Met Your Mother. I found the show to be extremely well constructed and thought-out, as well as funny and likeable. The pilot episode already seized my attention, and made me feel empathy and love for all the characters. I highly recommend the show to anybody!

Chicago P.D

Chicago P.D. one of many crime and drama series produced by Dick Wolf, will have the audience on the edge of their seats. Throughout the pilot episode it is evident how the audience recognises the crucial characteristics of Sergeant Hank Voight that determines the ongoing plot of the series. Sergeant Voight is the epitome of corrupt police but for the good of the community, as he breaks laws and does not follow procedure in order to find out the truth and get justice. Throughout the season premiere District 21’s Intelligence Unit are racing against time to find the leader of a Colombian drug cartel. Detective Olinski recruits Rookie Adam Ruzek from the police academy while someone from Intelligence ends up murdered. The suspense of the show will have you hungry for more episodes.

Supernatural

Supernatural

Not really a fan of these types of dramas, but Supernatural definitely impressed.

Supernatural is a drama-horror show that follows the lives of Sam and Dean Winchester, two brothers who carry out their father’s legacy by saving people and hunting monsters. The pilot reveals that the world Sam and Dean lives in is not only occupied by humans but countless supernatural beings including vampires, werewolves, demons and ghosts among others. The journey starts when Dean asks Sam to help him look for their father after he went missing hunting a poltergeist. Sam reluctantly joins Dean but insists after they find their father he is going straight back to living the life he had forged which involved him living normally, going to law school and having a girlfriend. All that changes after the evil spirit kills Sam’s current girlfriend and in turn influences Sam to take on a vengeful attitude. After losing his girlfriend, Sam joins Dean on their search for their father and together they face a multitude of mysterious beings they must destroy in order to trace their father’s whereabouts. Sam and Dean are played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, respectively, both extremely handsome actors who alone are the perfect (or only) reason to watch.

Supernatural is a great show for a more mature audience as themes can be quite scary and horrifying at times. It is recommended the watcher allocates at least 3 years to binge watch this show as it is in its 11th season and each season has 22 episodes and every episode is 40 minutes so yeah it’ll take a while.

Here is some of the best of season 1-5 to get you in the mood and get an idea of the show!

GOSSIP GIRL

(playbuzz.com)

Gossip Girl. Just like the O.C but better! Situated in the best city in the world, New York - it follows around the rich kids of the upper east side. If you can’t be them, you want to be. And you can live out that fantasy watching GG.  The scandals just don’t stop. The show uses Kristen Bell as the voiceover of Gossip Girl, narrating the secret blog that exposes the ‘IT’ girls and boys juiciest secrets. This blog is the ‘bread and butter’ of the kids of NYC.

The show opens with the extremely beautiful, rich and bad-girl, Serena Vanderwoodsen on a train into NYC, after disappearing to boarding school under mysterious circumstances. She reunites with former BFF Blair who looks displeased to see her. Why did S (Serena) leave her without a moments notice or explanation?. But Blair has troubles of her own with her boyfriend Nate Archebold. He might be hot, but he is definitely hiding something, and its evident when he sees Serena again. A cheating scandal between the BFF and boyfriend perhaps? Now thats a new one ;)

Meanwhile Dan Humphrey, his sister Jenner and Dad, who come from a more humble and less elite background have just moved into Brooklyn across the bridge and finds himself somehow as Serena Vanderwoodsen’s romantic interest. And then, there is the infamous Chuck Bass. More money than you could imagine. Throws wild parties, pulls any (and every) girl, rides in limousines and basically lives an unimaginable but enviable life. He’s a bad character, as he tries to get with Dan’s little and innocent sister Jenny at the kiss on the lips party, the biggest party of the year. Will anyone get to her before its too late?

I love the setting of Gossip Girl, the fashion and cast. Whilst living a prestige life in NYC is every kids dream, these guys show its not all smooth sailing. The drama is just heating up. Can’t wait to see what’s in store.

Orange is the New Black

Orange is the New Black

The main character – Piper Chapman – is convicted of a crime that happened over a year ago! She was part of a drug ring and was being sentenced 15 months in a women’s correctional facility – Litchfield. As we are introduced to Piper’s quirky and somewhat humorous character, we see that her whole life is planned out especially as she tries to read about what prison life is like and how to ‘survive’. This episode slightly explores Litchfield and how Piper needs to understand and fit in to the hierarchies and structure within the prison.

We can tell from the pilot episode that this series is going to be full of drama and a fight for survival for Piper in Litchfield! Can’t wait to continue to see what happens next!!!

How To Get Away With Murder

This pilot episode is jammmmm packed!!

·       First of all Annalise Keating – a law professor and criminal defence attorney – selects five students from Middleton University to intern at her firm (Wes, Connor, Michaela, Asher and Laurel).
·       Annalise’s first client is a woman who is accused of attempted murder of her boss and lover
·       Wes (one of the interns) discovers that Annalise is cheating on her husband Sam

The main story line throughout Season 1 is of a missing student, Lila Stangard and the unveiling facts of her murder. The structure of the series is intriguing with cases being solved backwards – always having flashbacks and constantly revealing facts – which keeps the audience guessing of what happens next!
